Do eyeglasses expire?

How long do eyeglasses last?

Wearing prescription glasses is often considered easier than wearing contact lenses.
However, although a pair of eyeglasses does not strictly speaking expire like contact lenses, they do have a limited lifespan.
Here's why it's important to change your prescription glasses regularly, and how to know when it's time to do so.

Why eyeglasses are only temporary

Contact lenses have a renewal period and an expiry date on their packaging.
This is not the case with prescription glasses, but this does not mean that they can be used for life.
Eyeglasses do not expire, but they do need to be replaced, depending on a number of criteria.
Firstly, the lenses of a pair of prescription glasses carry the visual correction prescribed by an ophthalmologist.
However, this is only valid for one to five years, depending essentially on the age of the wearer, so eyesight needs to be checked regularly.
Visits to the eye doctor ensure that vision has not changed and that no ocular pathology has developed.
Depending on the check-up, the eyeglass lenses may have to be changed, which often means changing the whole pair.
What's more, spectacles that are worn regularly can suffer from wear and tear over time.
This can cause the lenses to become scratched, even slightly, and the frame to stretch over time.
Exposure to the sun can also cause the lenses to yellow and the frame to fade.
Even if eyeglasses have been well stored and cared for, they will naturally deteriorate over time.

The main signs that it's time for new eyeglasses

As mentioned above, your eyesight needs to be checked regularly, sometimes once a year.
A check-up with your optician will determine whether or not you need to change your lenses.
However, during this time, a few signs can alert you to the need to change your vision correction.
For example, your vision may become blurred or doubled, your eyes may become more sensitive to light, and may tire more easily.
Similarly, recurring headaches can be a warning sign of a decline in vision.
As well as an outdated prescription, a pair of glasses may have other signs that they need to be replaced.
For example, a frame that keeps sliding forward or a pair with yellowed or scratched lenses should be replaced.
Feel free to ask your Optical Center optician if you should change your eyeglasses.
